Get some help for your codec problems
Codecs can be a real pain. If you have all of them installed and working, good for you. But as this is not usually the case, it's good to have tools like CodecInstaller, which can help you organize, find, download and install audio and video codecs. Despite its simple, almost austere interface, this program is definitely worth it for those of you with codec problems.
CodecInstaller includes three main functions: scanning your system to find installed codecs, analyzing a given file to display the codecs it uses and finally giving you direct access to the most popular audio and video codecs, the ones that should be found on any PC.
The program can also be used as "video launcher" but this function requires some configuration. You'll find more information in the Help section.

Try it without thinking twice!.
Reading the previous user's opinion, I was a bit dubious before trying this program but after a fast download (it's only 500KB) and installation (just remember to uncheck the toolbar box if you are not interested) the program runs smoothly and it seems well done.
I especially loved what the program calls 'filter mapping editor': if it is designed for power users, and gives you complete control of the filter priority and the formats it will decode.
Avi files analysis could be more detailed, but it isn't bad. I liked also the possibility to detect fake files.
Good program
Pros:
easy to use, delivers what it says, free
Cons:
browser toolbar in the installer (BTW its installation is optional, it is no spyware and uninstallation is fast and complete) More

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
This piece of nonsense tries to install a web browser toolbar, has spyware in it and it's only function when you try and install codecs is to send you to the related website you could have found yourself on Google anyway. Cons:
It's a con. More
